Come Come Ye Saints!

Landon and Mason!

Happy Pioneer Day!  This year it really feels like we have celebrated and commemorated the pioneers from being at Nauvoo last week and a few other activities this week.   Grateful for those that went before us that paved the way for us to have the blessings of the gospel.  I think of our ancestors that crossed the plains and how they sacrificed so much, as well as those ancestors that joined the church and also sacrificed lifestyles, family and friend relationships.  We are all pioneers as we are paving the way for future generations.  Your mission service really paves the way for many future generations.   So grateful and proud of you two for your service.

The last blog came when we were in Kansas City.  Our last day we went to Independence, MO and then to Liberty Jail.  Both places were very nice.  Liberty jail is inside a building.  Some of the original stone is still used but the rest of it is reconstruction.  We are all grateful for the revelations received in that jail.  One thing that stuck out to me was during an audio recording is how they described Joseph's politeness when he arrived at the jail.  Despite being wrongfully imprisoned, he was kind and polite.

Independence was a visitor center.  We spent a little bit of time there and Grace enjoyed the pioneer playroom at the end of the tour.

At the visitor's center we obtained a map of many little historical markers in Kansas City that we had not heard about.  We didn't have a lot of time since we needed to get to the airport but we did check out this monument of the the 8 witnesses.  It's kind of interesting because it's out along a country road kind of in the middle of now where.  Then there is small fenced off grass area with this monument.  It's believed that this is where the 8 witnesses testified of the B.O.M.

We got home to a busy week.  The Hatch's were here for a couple of days right when we got home.  They didn't stay with us but we met them a couple of times in Provo while they were visiting after a family reunion.
Natalie and Lydia at the Provo Beach ropes course.

Dad and I were lucky to be able to go to the Mormon Tabernacle Pioneer Concert.  It was so good.  They sang some pioneer songs and then the choir and the two broadway guest sang Roger and Hammerstein songs from the many musicals they wrote the music for.  Love the MoTab!

Saturday was Mapleton Pioneer Day Celebration!
The day started off with the 5K and kids fun run.  Dad, Jacob and myself signed up to run.  Lydia wasn't too interested so she stayed with Grace.  It was hard to get out of bed early after a nice night in SLC but when we got there our energy increased.  I'll admit there was part of me that wondered why I had signed up.

First it was the kids 1 mile fun run!  Jacob lined up and got ready.  Lots of kids ready to run.

They started in front of the city building and ran toward main and around the elementary.  I waited at the start finish line.  I was so surprised when the biker that was leading the kids turned the corner and Jacob was leading the pack.

Then a kid behind Jacob really picked up his speed and really challenged Jacob to the finish line.

But in the end thanks to the chip timer Jacob came in 1st overall!  He surprised us with his fast speed running the mile in 6:22.

Then the 5K started and both Dad and I were worried about how we would do since we had been on vacation and running had been so sporadic.  But guess what we didn't do so bad...

Dad finished 9th overall (6th of the men) with a time of 20.19  and a pace of 6.33.  He also finished 2nd in his division.  Not too bad.  (he was originally hoping to finish under 20 but he was happy with the results)

I finished 45th (17th women) overall with a time of 24:41 and a 8:02 pace.  And 3rd place in my division.
Do you recognize the 1st place?  Heidi Murray is fast!
So overall it was a successful day at the 5K for our family.

Then it was off to the parade....
Sister Beth Larson and her walking friend Susan were the Grand Marshalls in the parade.
It was perfect!

Jacob walked with the N.O.V.A police officer (kind of like D.A.R.E) and got to pass out candy.  He had fun!

The park was HOT.  100 degrees and crowded.  We didn't stay too long.  But Gracie had fun playing a few games.

That night at the fireworks the weather changed drastically. Right after the ping pong drop, the wind picked up.  Everyone quickly took down their canopies and then the wind stopped and the rain started and it poured.  It was really funny cause there was so many people there running and grabbing whatever they could.  Several of us crowed under this umbrella.  We had some good laughs, but we were wet.

Then about 1 hour before the show the rain stopped and the band started.  The kids had fun dancing and getting excited for the fireworks show.

Then the fireworks show was as good as always.

Love you!
